Whenever you decide to make a change to life long habits, it can be totally overwhelming. It’s no different with transitioning to nutrient dense Real Food. This is part of the reason some people don’t even want to try — and why others do not succeed. What you have to remember is that your current eating habits evolved over years and changing those habits takes time, effort and thought.  You’ve already taken the most important step — your intention to change. Here are some tips to help you realize that intention.

Change One Major Food Item at a Time

It is impossible to change everything at one time. Take it step by step. Change a major food item and incorporate it into your meals. This can take one week, several weeks or even a month. For instance, get rid of all those rancid vegetable oils and replace them with good, healthy fats like butter, ghee, extra virgin olive oil, good saturated fats like coconut oil, lard and tallow from grassfed animals.

Finding a source for grassfed animals and their fat can be a project that takes a while. So you see, this one major food group can lead you into changing lots of things in your pantry. You have to give yourself time to do that.

Shop the Perimeter of the Store

Shopping around the store and not down the aisles eliminates much of the packaged foods you may have been buying. Around the perimeter are the produce aisles, the butcher and the dairy. I recommend buying plenty of produce (organic when possible) and full fat dairy.

I really recommend you source raw dairy, but as a beginner, you may need to put that off until you research the value of raw milk (realmilk.com) and become comfortable with it. In the mean time, stop buying packaged foods and concentrate on fresh whole foods that you have to cook yourself.

Start Adding Much More of the Good Foods Before Eliminating the Junk

This will make the transition go easier on your family. Get them used to the flavors of real food and after a while they will really like it and ask for it. Add in eggs for breakfast instead of cold cereal (and skim milk blah!) Use bacon — everyone loves bacon. Introduce them to new vegetables smothered in butter — everyone loves butter!

Get a Cookbook That Features Real Food Cooking

It’s much easier to use recipes that have already been tested then to try to substitute or make up your own. Get a good basic real food cookbook like Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon Morrel.
