The GAPS diet is a comprehensive healing protocol developed by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a neurologist and nutritionist who specializes in the healing of autism spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia, bipolar and schizophrenia by treating the root cause, which is compromised gut flora. This affects the immune system (80% of the immune system is in the gut) and can lead to a breakdown of the blood/brain barrier. Toxins may enter the brain and cause neurological (as in ASD) or psychological (as in bipolar, etc) symptoms.
The GAPS Diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) takes the Specific Carbohydrate Diet to another level. Keeping the same basic premise of the SCD, that an imbalance of the intestinal flora (leaky gut, intestinal dysbiosis) is the underlying cause of digestive diseases and other health problems, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride introduces concepts from traditional cooking practices and healing methods to further enhance the diet.
The GAPS introductory diet is much more involved than SCD introductory diet. GAPS eliminates many more foods than just starches in the beginning, so as to be able to identify foods that are not tolerated by the individual at each particular stage of their healing. GAPS is also well-immersed in Weston Price Foundation (WAPF) food preparation principles as well as food quality issues. Some people who have not succeeded on SCD can go on to heal using the GAPS protocol.
