Giveaway: One Gallon Tropical Traditions Gold label Coconut Oil

Giveaway: One Gallon Tropical Traditions Gold label Coconut Oil post image

Coconut oil is a healthy saturated fat that has been used by natives of the Tropics, India and Asia for thousands of years and longer. This traditional oil, that has kept people healthy for milenea is used for everything from cooking to skin and hair care. Close to two-thirds of the saturated fat in coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids, which are easily digested by the body for quick energy.

One of the first changes to make when starting a real food diet is to take care of the fats and oils you are eating. Many people are still under the impression that the polyunsaturated vegetable fats are good and the saturated fats are bad. Frankly, it is just the opposite. The saturated fats have been vilified, yet they are packed with critical fat soluble vitamins that we do not get from most vegetable oils with one exception.

How could an oil that is so good for you have gotten such a bad reputation?

The answer comes down to simple economics and politics. Based on some flawed studies performed over four decades ago, some of which used primarily unhealthy hydrogenated coconut oils, a powerful anti-saturated fat movement began.

Hydrogenated oils are oils with trans-fatty acids, which have been altered from their original chemical composition and have been shown to raise cholesterol levels and lead to heart disease and other health problems. You should not consume hydrogenated oils, whether it is coconut or any other vegetable oil. Trans fats and hydrogenated oils are actually banned from certain municipalities because people are starting to understand what Dr. Mary Enig has been saying for the past four decades.

Edible Oil Industry Promotes Rancid Vegetable Oils

Around the 1960’s the edible oil industry began to denounce all saturated fats and heavily promote polyunsaturated fats such as canola, soybean, safflower, corn, and other seed and nut oils. However, these oils are highly refined, easily become rancid when exposed to oxygen and produce large amounts of damaging free radicals in the body. Additionally, they are mainly from genetically modified crops. What is not commonly known is that these oils can actually cause premature aging, clotting, inflammation, cancer and weight gain.

Fortunately, coconut oil has begun to gain some positive media exposure as researchers realize it has been used for thousands of years. However, coconut oil can vary widely in terms of the types of coconuts used and the manufacturing processes used to make the oil. These factors play a major role in the effectiveness of the oil.

Many commercial coconut oils are RBD (refined, bleached, and deodorized). RBD oils do contain the medium chain fatty acids, however they also contain chemicals used in processing. It is better to buy a coconut oil that has not been bleached, deodorized, refined or hydrogenated. This is called virgin coconut oil.

Coconut oil has a medium smoke point which makes it really good for pan sauteing and baking. It tastes delicious in baked goods and is great to add to shakes. Some people enjoy it added to coffee or tea as well. There are hundreds of uses for coconut oil.

What an amazing giveaway!!! I’m just about out of my gallon container, so this would be a wonderful prize to win!! I suffer from severe food allergies and Celiac’s, so I’m extremely limited in what products I can use.
Before I found Tropical Traditions, I was using (super drying!) ivory soap and baby oil as my “moisturizer”…not moisturizing at all! I felt like my skin was going to crack off! Now I use coconut oil for EVERYTHING!! Face moisturizer, body lotion, hair serum, cooking, antibacterial treatment, coconut pulling, etc etc…the list goes on and on!
Thank you for this amazing giveaway, and my fingers (and toes!) are crossed that I’ll finally win something, lol:) Great blog, btw!

    Warmest wishes,
