Diets Just Don’t Work

These researchers in a review article in Clinical Science in 2013 concluded that,
Although weight loss can usually be achieved through dietary restriction and/or increased physical activity, the overwhelming majority of people regain the weight that they have lost over the long-term.
However, it’s not simply lack of restraint. These researchers published in European PubMed Central indicate that it’s not entirely the person’s lack of self control that causes weight gain after weight loss, but that there are other physiological factors involved.
The obvious reason for weight regain after weight loss treatment is that participants return to inappropriate eating and exercise habits. These habits need not be as bad as pretreatment habits to cause regain, because metabolic factors may make it easier to regain after a period of dietary restriction…The pattern of relapse and regain appears to be the result of a war between the will and physiologic demands over which self-control appears relatively powerless.
Physiological issues are huge in weight management. These include metabolism set point and thyroid function, fat burning mechanisms and sugar metabolism, and the health of the gut microbiome.
Interestingly, recent studies have shown that lean mice have different colonies of gut bacteria than obese mice. They found that transferring the lean mices’ gut bacteria to the obese mice, made the obese mice thin. I wonder if this can happen with humans???
Fat Accumulates as We Age
Around the age of 30, your muscle tissue starts to morph into fat tissue (at about the rate of 1 pound per year).
Sadly, this accelerates as you get older. Even though you may be the same weight, your body composition will be made up of more fat and less muscle, leading to that soft, round body habitus.
You may wake up one day and find the body snatcher has come and replaced your firm body parts with flabby parts from someone else LOL!
Your muscle is an active metabolic organ on its own. Even though the thyroid and adrenal glands are thought of as your most important metabolic organs, it is actually your muscles that determines how much fat you burn.
That’s why losing muscle mass is so devastating to your body composition and waistline — it weakens your fat burning capacity while stimulating your fat making machinery.
This is why, as you age, it’s so difficult to burn fat – and why you seem to keep putting on weight even if you aren’t changing what you eat.
