Diabetes is perhaps one of the most pressing health problems in the world today. It is predicted that by 2050 one in three adults and one in three children will have diabetes – with minorities at higher risk. That translates to poor quality of life, shorter lifespan, and more health care and pharmaceuticals necessary. While health officials talk about reducing risk, they are not giving the correct dietary advice and they are not indicating that a diagnosis is not a life sentence. Diabetes can be reversed – you just need to get the correct information and you need to take control of your own health.
The CDC report predicts that the number of new diabetes cases each year will increase from 8 per 1,000 people in 2008, to 15 per 1,000 in 2050. Adding that number to the already existing cases of diabetes, they are estimating that 1 in 3 adults and children will be living with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes was always thought of as an adult disease.
Not any more.
Researchers at the CDC made the prediction that one in three children born in the United States in 2000 will likely develop type 2 diabetes sometime in their lifetime unless they get more exercise and improve their diets. The prediction was especially serious for Latino children. Without changes in diet and exercise, their odds of developing diabetes as they grow older was 1 in 2.
Doctors Treat Symptoms
Diabetes is a symptom of metabolic dysfunction. Cutting edge research has shown that the core condition underlying diabetes is inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying condition for many of our chronic diseases of modern times.
Medication for diabetes treats the symptoms of elevated blood sugar and if metabolic syndrome is present, with other symptoms of high blood pressure and high cholesterol (which may or may not be a problem), more drugs are used for these symptoms as well.
As reported at the 5th International Congress on Prediabetes and the Metabolic Snydrome (PDMS) 2013, diabetic patients were put on a low carbohydrate diet and were assisted in lifestyle changes for exercise and weight lose. They were compared to a group that was put on the typical low fat diet.
Interestingly, the low carb group fared better by being able to lower their diabetic medications, lower their blood pressure and improve diastolic function. Are you surprised?
While both groups experienced some weight loss, the low carb group had a really significant improvement in glucose metabolism that lead to a decrease in need for diabetic medication of 86% after only three weeks on the program. That is amazing!
What Your Doctor Did Not Tell You
Most conventional doctors suggest a Mediterranean type diet which is certainly healthier for lots of people, but is still heavy on grains. Grains get digested right away and go into the blood stream as sugar. Even whole grains. There is many other reasons to avoid grains that you can read about here.
1- Once a diabetic always a diabetic — They tell you that you must learn to live with it and manage it forever. Most health professionals assume it will get worse, not better. However, type 2 diabetes is preventable and reversible if you take action and make consistent lifestyle changes.
2- You may believe that you primary doctor or endocrinologist is doing everything possible to help you. The standard of care is disease management — but there is so much more that you can do that conventional medicine does not consider – as it is not part of the pharmacopeia.
3- You may have been told that drugs and medications are only option to manage and treat diabetes. However, good care starts with appropriate diet and exercise, and addressing proper sleep and stress management. You must be open to natural substances that can help control blood sugar.
4 – You may have been told that diabetes is genetic and so there is nothing you can do if it is in the family. We all have genetic predispositions – you have to consider what in your lifestyle and environment triggers the disease.
5- You may have been told that if you take the doctors advice you will avoid the serious long term complications of diabetes. However, their goal is only to lower blood sugar levels – not to look at the root cause. Without addressing the root cause, even with good blood sugar control, you can still suffer from the complications, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, eye problems, neurological problems and other sequelae. The best way to avoid these complications is with proper diet and lifestyle changes.
