US health officials are constantly recommending actions that are counter to every traditional way of eating, including their mandate to lower salt intake. Of course, there are some people who are eating too much salt in processed foods. These folks need to look at their overall diet and make changes – not just lowering their salt intake.
In fact, British research published by The Cochrane Library, found that while cutting salt consumption did appear to lead to slight reductions in blood pressure, that was not translated into lower death rate or heart disease risk.
Rod Taylor of Exeter University, led the review and stated, “…with governments setting ever lower targets for salt intake and food manufacturers working to remove it from their products, it’s really important that we do some large research trials to get a full understanding of the benefits and risks of reducing salt intake.”
Traditional cultures ate huge amounts of salt in their fermented and cultured foods. However, the salt was a pure, unprocessed sea salt.
Redmond Real Salt is harvested from below the surface of the earth and is protected by a layer of bentonite clay from an ancient sea bed that has not had contact with the modern world or it’s pollutants.
They harvest the salt using carbide-tipped equipment that scrapes the salt off the walls of the mine. The salt is then screened and crushed and given a final screening to make sure there are no contaminants before packaging.
Nothing is added to the salt and nothing is removed.
There are several ways to enjoy Redmond Real Salt: as pure sea salt or combined with organic spices like onion and garlic and they also have a seasoning that combines several organic spices with their fabulous salt.

I love Real Salt and use it on everything. What I don’t understand is that right on the 26oz packaging it states “this salt does not supply iodine”. We need the iodine for thyroid health. So am I misunderstanding something….why would Dr. Brownstein recommend this brand (he did in the summit) and why would it be on a post along with mention of the thyroid summit. It’s like saying here you need iodine and here is a salt (but without the warning “unfortunately it doesn’t contain the iodine you need”).
Hi Roni,
Yes, we need iodine, but it is not in sufficient amounts in the salt. You have to get from other sources (not iodized as that would have other additives). most doctors recommend this brand because it has 60 trace minerals.
Thank you for the give away Jill!
I’m all in :O) This looks great!
I entered the contest. Thanks.
